This is a question we often get with clients regardless of what time they train.

What should I be eating before and after i exercise?

When it comes to before training I find this to be quite an individual preference some people can eat 30 mins before others have to wait up to two hours, something light 1 hour beforehand from experience seems to be the best option and lands in the middle of these two.

If your training at lunch time or in the evening for example your previous meal or a snack of fruit and some nuts will suffice.

If your a first thing in the morning trainer and need to eat something, a small amount of yoghurt or fruit is an option here.

After exercise tends to be more important to overall results as this is the meal that will start your recovery process, forget all supplements lets just talk real food in that first hour after you’ve fired up that metabolism the next meal is vital.

What your looking for here is a good source of protein (chicken breast) along with a slow release carbohydrate (sweet potato) and some good fats (walnuts,) For the guys who trained in the morning you could change this for Eggs along with a good quality rye, sourdough or spelt bread with some avocado spread and spinach.

Another useful tip on days of training is to take in some extra water to help rehydrate your muscles an extra litre where possible through the day.

To conclude this short piece on eating around exercise, it is vital to long term results but does take time to get right so don’t get frustrated and work with your trainer to find the schedule that works for your body.
