There was an impressive line-up for the FIT Magazine 5km and 10km race series opener in Dublin’s Phoenix Park.

Dublin Marathon 2013 winner Sean Hehir, Gary O’Hanlon and Catherina McKiernan raised the bar as temperatures rose to double figures for the 1,500-plus participants.

A tough two-lap course for the 10km race was the stuff of dreams according to Hehir, who took the honours in 30.40.

“I was disappointed not to be able to do this event last year so I am delighted to be here today and win it even with heavy legs,” explained Hehir, who is in full training mode at the moment as he chases a 2:17 marathon.

“My legs were a bit heavy but the support from the other runners as we lapped them was a huge support, it pushed me on.”

Hehir continues to work as a full- time teacher, but manages to find time to train and coach.

“I am lucky to be able to share my passion for the sport and to have the support of my parents and girlfriend.”

ULTRA

O’Hanlon finished second in 31:33, having made his ultra distance debut only a few weeks ago in the Donadea 50km, where he took top spot and secured his place in the world 50km championships.

Alan Kenny of 3D Tri took third place in 33.52, while the top three women were all well within the top 10 overall.

As for McKiernan, the veteran made er move on the leaders at the 8km mark. “I didn’t go out too hard but just kept the girls in my sight,” she said.

“I used the downhill to my advantage and just drew up alongside them to see if they would go with me but once I kicked I was out on my own and just kept going.”

Her winning time of 34.28 brought her over the line ahead of Sarah Mulligan 34.43 of DSD and Claire Gibbons 34.47 of MSB AC.

The 5km race was won in a fast time of 16.04 by Kevin Baker of Mullingar Harriers.

The first woman was Karen Holmes 22.24, who only took up running about a year ago. She was closely followed by Maija Runjanceva 22.36 and Dianne Hunt 22.39. Second and third males were spread out, with Hadrian Garnier 17.46 and Tony Cahalan 18.22.
