If you are one of those people who hasn’t got the time to train hours on end to get the results you really want or are just not focused enough to train the way you need to or if you are an athlete looking for extra guidance to increase your performance then a personal trainer might just be your answer but choosing the right trainer can be more difficult than expected. There are hundreds of personal trainers out there all promising to get you in the best shape of your life but in order to get the right trainer for you, you need to do your research.
Here a few key things in order to choose the best personal trainer for you.
Does that person live and breathe fitness. Look at the shape of your trainer, does he she listen to what you are telling them in order to give you the best workout for the results you want to achieve rather than what they want for you.
Is he she qualified and to what level? There are many qualifications out there from basic level to more advanced training. Does the trainer continue to train up in qualifications. This is very important. Nobody knows it all and a hunger for more knowledge is a sign of a good trainer.
Make sure your trainer is insured. Accidents can happen when you workout so make sure your trainer has insurance in place.
Look at the trainers other clients do they have any? Are they in good shape, do they look like they are enjoying their workouts.
A good trainer will have a consultation form. There should be questions about prior injuries any medical history food and lifestyle questions etc.
Visit the gym or personal training studio and see do you like the feel from it. This may sound strange but a good vibe from a gym will be the key to you wanting to go back for more.
Choose a gym or personal training studio that can work into your schedule. If its too far away it will become a hassle to go to getting stuck in traffic etc.
If the trainer is professional they can eat and drink coffee on their own time.
Choose a trainer for whom personal training is their profession – that doesn’t spend all their time looking in the mirror at their own physique. Your trainer should be 100% focused on you and your results not their own.
If you are an athlete don’t put your body in the hands of someone who does not have the ability to push you to the right extent. Look for a trainer who has trained Olympic Athletes who knows what they are talking about.
When you choose a trainer that you like make sure they do the following:
Keep you motivated. Even with a trainer people can tend to slack on the diet. A good trainer will always come up with new and inventive ways to motivate you.
One of the key roles for a personal trainer is to be able to discuss diet. There is no point in eating all the wrong foods and not seeing all that hard work.
Change the workouts consistently. There is nothing more boring than doing the same sets week in week out and it a sign of a lazy trainer. Clients should get a different workout everytime they come in.
Make sure your trainer does not spend too much time with their head in a note book. A good trainer will remember your rep ranges and be able to push you without long rest periods to check note books.
Enjoy your time with your trainer. There is nothing wrong with having a laugh or a short conversation providing you are doing the work.
You should feel exhilarated after a workout and looking forward to the next one.
